This lecture by author and architect Pierluigi Serraino will address the gaps of knowledge and representation in the architectural discourse of modern architecture when photographic archives are either lost, unprocessed or in private hands, inaccessible for scholarly appraisal. Two case studies will be presented to demonstrate the correlation and causation between visibility of archival resources and identity formation in the construction of the architectural canon. While architectural photography is central in the delivery of this argument, additional emphasis will be given to the function of the archive itself in shaping our current knowledge of the culture and outcome of modern architecture. A third and final case study will highlight the extent of this phenomenon.
