This talk seeks to answer two questions: What are the sources of South Korean popular music's success? And what does it say about South Korea?

John Lie is a professor of sociology and Dean of International and Area Studies at the University of California, Berkeley. His principal academic interests are social theory, political economy, social identity, and East Asia.
