“Why still speak of the real and the virtual, the material and immaterial? Here these categories are not in opposition, or in some metaphysical disagreement, but more in an electroliquid aggregation, enforcing each other, as in a two part adhesive.â€
- Lars Spuybroek, [1998] Motor Geometry, Architectural Design, Vol 68 No 5/6, p5
In this presentation Russell Lowe will show work from a range of projects that use computer gaming technology to support, extend and challenge architecture. Using a mixture of video footage, live demonstration, custom hardware and software he will showcase the potential of AAA computer gaming technology to expand the limits of architectural design, representation and construction.
Russell Lowe is a Senior Lecturer at the University of New South Wales University in Sydney, Australia, where he teaches first year of the Architectural Studies program and final year of the Masters of Architecture program, both within the Faculty of the Built Environment. His research centres around the repurposing of computer gaming technology to engage with uses and concepts outside of the entertainment industry. He has developed unique insights into opportunities for architecture that take advantage of the multiple perspectives that new media and computer game environments afford. His prize winning research on architectural space spans from Clinical Simulation, through Construction Technology to Fine Art Films which have been exhibited worldwide in film festivals as well as private and public art galleries and museums.
