A panel discussion on "Bread Givers," the 1925 novel by Anzia Yezierska about a girl growing up in a New York household run by immigrant parents originally from Poland. "I want for to be a person!" cries protagonist Sara Smolinsky, rebelling against her Orthodox father's concept of Jewish womanhood. Set in the 1920s LES, this masterwork is just as compelling today. Part of the New York Novels Series, hosted by Vivian Gornick in conversation with Alice Kessler-Harris and Miriam Cohen.
