Can There Be Union between Nature and Technology in Fabrication?
Tuesday 05 February, 2013
6:30 - 8pm, $0/Rsvp
School of Visual Arts, Design Criticism
136 West 21 Street, Floor 2
Product designer Markus Kayser will talk about his recent works Solar Sinter and Sun Cutter—projects that harness the power of sunlight to make objects, and thus pose a provocation to current manufacturing methods, and blur the lines between science, art, and design. Kayser will discuss his views on contemporary design practice, considered in relation to invention, performance, technology, and nature.
Markus Kayser received his MA in Product Design from the Royal College of Art in London, UK, in 2011. His recent work, Solar Sinter, in which sunlight, sand, and a 3D printing process are used to produce glass objects, has received international media attention. Kayser is interested in the exploration of hybrid solutions, linking new technology and natural energy as a way to test new scenarios of production and material fabrication. Currently, Markus Kayser is working as a research assistant at the MIT Media Lab, in the Mediated Matter Group, which focuses on how digital and fabrication technologies mediate between matter and environment to radically transform the design and construction of objects, buildings, and systems.
