Here today, there tomorrow. Old-style travel stories seemed always to be about characters in search of themselves as inscribed in foreign landscapes. But what if the point of the travel is more escapist than exploratory? In such novels of discovery-avoidance – an avoidance not always successful – the journey is both more and less than a destination. Join us for a panel discussion on what modern travelogues entail with German authors, Tim Krohn, Cornelia Travnicek, Ulrike Ulrich, and American novelist, Joshua Ferris, as part of Festival Neue Literatur, New York’s first and only annual German-language literary festival. Moderated by Claudia Steinberg.

Curated by Susan Bernofsky and Claudia Steinberg, FNL was established in 2009 as a collaborative project of New York’s leading German-language cultural institutions: the Austrian Cultural Forum, Consulate General of Switzerland, Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany, Deutsches Haus at Columbia University, and Deutsches Haus at NYU. This year's festival features six accomplished writers from the contemporary German language literary scene, and US writers Joshua Cohen and Joshua Ferris in a series of discussions throughout the festival weekend.
