Going Solo: The Rise and Appeal of Living Alone
Eric Klinenberg in conversation with Jerilyn Perine
Thursday 07 February, 2013
6:30pm, $0
The Museum of The City of New York
1220 Fifth Ave
This program is organized by the Museum of the City of New York and is co-sponsored by the Architectural League of New York, the Citizens Housing and Planning Council, the Furman Center for Real Estate and Urban Policy at NYU, and Penguin Publishers.
More than 30% of the world’s population lives alone, and that percentage is growing daily. How is this profound demographic shift transforming the economic and cultural life of cities around the globe? Join NYU sociologist Eric Klinenberg, the author of Going Solo: The Extraordinary Rise and Surprising Appeal of Living Alone (Penguin, 2012), and Jerilyn Perine, Director of the Citizens Housing and Planning Council, for a discussion about the rise of single adults in New York, Paris, Tokyo, and other world metropolises – and its implications for urban life as (we think) we know it today.
Eric Klinenberg is Professor of Sociology, Public Policy, and Media, Culture, and Communications at New York University, and editor of the journal Public Culture. His new book, Going Solo: The Extraordinary Rise and Surprising Appeal of Living Alone, will be published in February 2012 by the Penguin Press.
Jerilyn Perine is the executive director of the Citizens Housing and Planning Council. She previously served as the Commissioner of the Department of Housing Preservation and Development during both the Giuliani and Bloomberg administrations.
The conversation will be followed by a wine reception at the museum.
