"The Crime of Monsieur Lange": Screening and discussion with Peter Schulman as part of the Tales of the 1% Film Series.

Dir. Jean Renoir | 1936 | 80 min | comedy crime drama

A man and a woman arrive in a cafe-hotel near the Belgian frontier. The customers recognize the man from the police's description. His name is Amedee Lange, he murdered Batala in Paris. His lady friend Valentine tells the whole story: Lange was an author of Wild West novels in Batala's printing works. When Batala absconded with the company funds, Lange rallied the employees together to create their own publishing house. Batala returned, disguised as a priest, and demanded a share of the profits. Lange responded by killing the bounder. The grateful employees help Lange to escape prosecution, allowing him to leave the country with Valentine. Great sense of atmosphere just before the Popular Front government in France.
