Artists Working with Non-Art Markets

2 Columbus Circle, Theater
In conjunction with MAD Museum and Are.na, Carson Salter is organizing an afternoon discussion with representatives from three artists' enterprises:
Are.na (Charles Broskoski) http://are.na/
K-Hole (Sean Patrick Monahan) http://khole.net/
RHEI Research (David Hilmer Rex) http://rhei.is/
Extending from Salter’s thesis research at MIT, his #Ambi_ project showcases the growing movement of contemporary artists’ businesses. Positioned between art and commerce, artists’ businesses may, on one hand, use standard profit motives, and send knowledge to commercial markets unrelated to art. On the other hand, artists working in a commercial mode may show work in galleries and identify primarily as artists. In either case, these enterprises establish a language and ontology of liminality: multivalent value propositions, personalized corporate terms, and attitudes of ambivalence. Over the course of this afternoon panel discussion, Salter and guests discuss the use of online platforms for scholarly research and a potential middle ground for artistic and corporate worlds.
