Today, artists working on the fringes of society wield greater freedom than in years past. The Internet has helped diminish the role of the intermediary and has given voice to amateurs and rebels to communicate directly with the public. Musicians are finding ways to hold themselves accountable to fans instead of managers and filmmakers have begun to create award-winning movies outside of Hollywood’s rein.
How do these amateur artists circumvent established authorities to create and disperse their art? Have modern business models and new technology begun to transform the creation and consumption of media in America?
Join New America NYC for a conversation on the growing number of artists who are working past the middleman and the effect they have had on mainstream culture.
