This presentation focuses on the issues of enlightenment and modernity through a reading of colonial Korean cinematic texts, propaganda movies for Japanese militarism in particular. Using the key concepts of love, identity and propaganda, I will consider the questions of the audience-as-pupils, resistance through movie watching, and authenticity of Korean national cinematic tradition. Co-sponsored by the Institute for Research on Women and Gender and the School of the Arts Film Department.
