Tuesday 18 February, 2014
6 - 8pm, $0
New School, Lang Community Center
55 West 13 Street, Room I205
Latin America's citizen security has significantly deteriorated in the last three decades. Violence, crime and fear of crime have increased in all Latin American countries. 11 out of 18 countries have homicide rates considered "epidemic" by the World Health Organization. Robberies have tripled in the last 25 years and up to 65% of Latin Americans reported having stopped going out at night due to fear of crime.
Join us for a presentation of the key findings of the 2013-14 UNDP Human Development Report, "Citizen Security with a Human Face: evidence and proposals for Latin America", recently featured in The Economist, by the report's Senior Advisor, Gema Santamaria, Sociology-Historical Studies, New School, followed by comments from Dr. Pablo Piccato, History, Columbia University.
Introductory remarks by Jonathan Bach, Chair, Global Studies at The New School.
The discussion will be followed by a Q&A and reception.
This event is sponsored by the Global Studies program at the School of Undergraduate Studies at The New School.
