And That Was the GDR: Revisiting East German Imaginaries
Wednesday 05 November, 2014
6:15pm, $0
New York University, Michelson Theater
721 Broadway, Floor 6
On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, this event explores the wide-ranging ways in which the GDR was imagined and re-imagined in a variety of film and televisual contexts during the decades before, and immediately following the end of Germany’s political division.
Introducing a broad range of subjects and sociocultural frameworks, ranging from transnational connections between GDR cinema and other national film cultures to posthumous expressions of nostalgia, the presentations evoke some of the ambiguities, contradictions, and undeniable richness embedded within East Germany’s visual heritage.
Organized by Cinema Studies Ph.D. candidates Jose Miguel Palacios, Sonja Simonyi, and Jaap Verheul. Moderated by Linnea Hussein (Ph.D. candidate, Cinema Studies)
This event is free and open to the public.
