In 1994, the US Supreme Court upheld the right of prisoners to hold prison officials accountable for "deliberate indifference" to their safety. The case was brought by Dee Farmer, a transgender prisoner who experienced assault and abuse because of her gender identity. We commemorate Dee Farmer and all incarcerated persons who are resisting abusive and discriminatory practices in detention.

Deliberate Resistance will bring together advocates, grassroots activists, practitioners, criminal justice officials, lawyers, and scholars to discuss the legal legacy of Dee Farmer’s case, the movement to end sexual abuse in detention, housing and segregation, and health care for LGBT incarcerated persons.

Speakers include: Elizabeth Alexander, Chris Daley, Amy Fettig, Reina Gossett, Jason Lydon, CeCe McDonald, Russell Robinson, Chase Strangio, and Harper Jean Tobin.

Cosponsored by ACLU, the Columbia Law School Center for Gender & Sexuality Law, Just Detention International, and the National Center for Transgender Equality.
