In this talk, curator and creative director Joanna Ebenstein will trace the evolution of her Morbid Anatomy project from art exhibition to blog to—in an unlikely turn of events—a new 4,200-square-foot museum in Brooklyn, New York. The museum, dedicated to “things which fall between the cracks of high and low culture, death and beauty, and disciplinary divides,” also houses a research library of over 2,000 ebooks as well as artifacts such as memorial artworks, medical moulages, wax embryological models, natural history specimens, and a variety of uncanny artworks and artifacts from around the world.

Joanna Ebenstein is a New York based artist, event producer, curator, and independent scholar. She is the creative director of the Morbid Anatomy Museum in Brooklyn, and founder of the Morbid Anatomy Blog and Library. She is co-author (and featured photographer) of Walter Potter’s Curious World of Taxidermy (Constable, 2013), with Dr. Pat Morris and co-editor ofThe Morbid Anatomy Anthology (Morbid Anatomy Press, 2014). She acted as curatorial consultant on the Wellcome Collection’s “Exquisite Bodies” exhibition (2009) and has also worked with such institutions as The New York Academy of Medicine, The Dittrick Museum, and The Vrolik Museum.
