Claire Messud is the author of four novels and a book of novellas. Her most recent novel, The Woman Upstairs, was published in 2013. Her 2006 novel The Emperor's Children was an international bestseller and was named a New York Times Book of the Year.

She teaches in the MFA program at Hunter College, and writes regularly forThe New York Review of Books. She lives in Cambridge, MA with her family.
