As part of a series of talks and performances that will take place at The Island (Ken)—an installation by artist-collective DIS—Sara Watson will present a talk titled “Data is the new____” that continues her research into alternative metaphors that can “bring big data back down to a human scale and provide a more humane conceptual model for thinking about our evolving relationship to data.” Watson, who is a technology critic and Fellow at Harvard University’s Berkman Center for Internet and Society, writes: “As rhetorical devices, metaphors shape the way we think about and interpret our relationship to data as companies, governments, populations, and individuals. Today’s dominant metaphors for data privilege the position of the technocratic powers that develop industrial rhetoric.”
