Stalking the Essay is a two-day conference devoted to all aspects of the form. 

The first day will consist of three panels featuring talks and readings by writers: 1) The New Essay, with Leslie Jamison, Lia Purpura and Meghan Daum; 2) The Book-Length Essay, with Geoff Dyer, Wayne Koestenbaum and Laura Kipnis; and 3) The Novelist/Critic as Essayist, with Marilynne Robinson, Jonathan Lethem and Hilton Als.  

The second day will be given over to three panels on the essay in other media: 1) Graphic Nonfiction and Radio Essay, with Roz Chast, Maira Kalman and Jeff Porter: 2) The Essay-Film, with scholars Michael Renov, Timothy Corrigan and Richard Pena, and 3) Essay Filmmakers, with Ross McElwee, Alan Berliner, Su Friedrich and Shelly Silver. 

This event, organized by Phillip Lopate, represents a unique collaboration between members of the Writing Program, the Film Department, the Visual Arts Department and the Columbia College English Department.

Additionally, essay films will be screened from 5-7pm at 501 Dodge during the weekend.
