In Mauro Javier Cardenas’s novel, The Revolutionaries Try Again, Latin American history, politics, and literature come under assault. At the center are three childhood friends--an expat, a bureaucrat, and a playwright--united by their revolutionary idealism for Ecuador’s future and divided by just about everything else. Cardenas’s maximalist, page-devouring style announces the arrival of an important new artist, and his debut is a self-conscious, absurd, and rapturous paean to the Latin American Novel.

This program will include accompaniment by pianist Rieko Tsuchida who will be playing Scriabin’s D Sharp Minor Etude and excerpts from Rzewski’s The People United Will Never be Defeated.

Mauro Javier Cardenas grew up in Guayaquil, Ecuador, and graduated with a degree in Economics from Stanford University. Excerpts from his first novel, The Revolutionaries Try Again, have appeared in Conjunctions, The Antioch Review, Guernica, Witness, and BOMB. His interviews and essays on/with László Krasznahorkai, Javier Marias, Horacio Castellanos Moya, Juan Villoro, and Antonio Lobo Antunes have appeared in Music & Literature, San Francisco Chronicle, BOMB, and The Quarterly Conversation.

Tony Tulathimutte is the author of the novel, Private Citizens, and has written for VICE, AGNI, The Threepenny Review, Salon, The New Yorker online, among other publications. A graduate of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop and Stanford University, he has received an O. Henry Award and a MacDowell Colony Fellowship. He lives in New York.

Since making her Carnegie Hall debut in 2009 as first prize winner of the Bradshaw and Buono International Piano Competition, pianist Rieko Tsuchida has performed internationally as a soloist and chamber musician. In May 2013 she made her solo recital debut at The Phillips Collection in Washington D.C. She has also performed with the Ashdod Symphonic Orchestra, the Rochester Philharmonic, the California Youth Symphony, and the San Domenico Orchestra. Ms. Tsuchida earned her Bachelor of Music Degree at the Peabody Conservatory and is currently pursuing her Master of Music Degree at The Juilliard School.
