Barnard Archives’ recent acquisition of artist and activist Sabra Moore’s papers offers the Barnard community a chance to improve Wikipedia’s coverage of women artists working for social justice in the 1970s through the mid-1990s. Moore’s work with the Heresies Collective and other feminist arts organizations was groundbreaking in its expansion of feminist and political discourse in the arts. Held in partnership with members of the Wikimedia Foundation, this edit-a-thon teaches the fundamentals of creating and editing in Wikipedia and increases access to scholarship surrounding the Heresies Collective and related artists of the period. By “hacking the canon,” we aim to correct the omission of many women artists, LGBTQ artists, and artists of color from the art historical canon and from general knowledge.
