Among Phillip Lopate's many books are  three personal essay collections --Bachelorhood, Against Joie de Vivre, and Portrait of My Body, two novels, Confessions of Summer and The Rug Merchant, and three collections of poems. His most recent books are A Mother's Tale, a memoir and To Show and to Tell: the Craft of Literary Nonfiction. He edited The Art of the Personal Essay and, for Library of America, Writing New York. He is the director of the nonfiction concentration in the graduate Writing Program at Columbia University School of the Arts, where he also teaches writing.
